Hiking: the all-in-one activity that’s good for your mind, body and soul and just another way to travel and see the world (and all its epicness!). Written by one of my best friends Ana (it’s her first time writing for TND so show some love!), see why hiking is maybe the best “workout” ever:Everybody has a preferred method of working out. Some people like to go to the gym, play sports, do yoga, etc. Personally, I run all the time and nothing makes me feel more happy and blissful. However, in my recent and unexpected trip to ColoradoI UTERLLY fell in love with hiking and here is why:As I started my first hike, Lilly Pad Lake Trail in Silverthorne, Colorado, I couldn’t help but feel out of place, which is completely normal for any first timer. I would notice people with more experience walking with such grace and ease. Even their dogs seemed to be better hikers than me! It was a medium trail in difficulty and somehow we managed to make it to the top (with just a “few” stops in between). I won’t lie, even though it took us around two hours to get there, the scenery we passed while walking to the lake and then the lake itself was breathtaking. I have never seen such a beautiful place in my life. When I returned to the hotel, I started to feel different, in a good kind of uncomfortable way. After my hike the next day, I figured out why.Hiking is the perfect body workout. The body seems to do a great job in recognizing this type of exercise and increasing the amount of energy needed during a hike. You are going to work ALL of your body and directly target your lower body muscles in order to keep up with the different grounds, altitudes, slopes, pathways that go up, down, and sideways. Hiking can help you burn plenty of calories and even get in shape at a pace you feel comfortable with.
But more importantly:
There is a “feel good” component to hiking, which has to be greatly emphasized. Personally, I believe this is the most important aspect. As you hike and internalize all of your surroundings, you start unwinding your mind and experiencing a feeling of reinvigoration and pure amazement. In a blink of an eye, you are able to take it all in. You stop asking yourself the wrong questions and start appreciating the simplicity of things. You start noticing that the most beautiful thing, nature, surrounds us every day and has the ability to decrease our tension, anger, and confusion. Hiking also allows you to know yourself better by being completely unrestrained at that moment. Most importantly, it gives us the peace we are all looking for.
I used to believe hiking was nothing more than just endlessly walking around some mountain and having to walk the same distance again in order to exit the trail. I used to think hiking was not a real exercise at all. I know that a lot of people share these kind of thoughts but I’ve come to realize that these are big misconceptions; misconceptions, which are quickly spread if not firsthand experienced by the person. Therefore, I encourage and challenge anyone and everyone to try it for themselves and experience a moment of pure bliss!
