Austin Foodie Guide

Hi nomads! I am very excited to be writing this article as it is a favorite topic of mine: food (and Austin of course)! With any place you go, doing as a local would will always deliver you the most authentic travel experiences, eating like a local especially.  SO, with Austin being my new home, I’ve got the ultimate local Austin foodie guide ready for y’all to devour

Food signs

This is the easiest job ever because Austin is literally a foodies dream land. There are restaurants on every corner and each of them is more cool and mouth watering than the next. I’ve conveniently broken them up into categories for y’all as well.. I like to make finding amazing food easy.. it’s my public service if you will!

Without further a do, your Austin Foodie Guide:

Austin Foodie Guide

Want to know more and are ready to be really hungry?! I’m going to touch on a few of the categories above that really stand out and represent Austin as a city, as well as dive a little deeper into each one of them:

Breakfast Tacos

  • TacoDeli

A very popular Texas chain (I know I said no chains but this is a special case!). My favorite part is that you can create your own! They also have amazing hot sauces that you can try out if you’re not afraid of a little Texas heat 😉
  • Maudie’s

Yummmmm. Maudie’s is a very popular spot in Austin and their breakfast taco’s are to die for (figuratively, of course). Try Pete’s Tantalizing Taco, it’s a fan favorite! I’m not gonna lie though, these are yummy taco’s, not pretty tacos! BUT, let’s be honest, taste will always win.

Veracruz All Natural breakfast tacos, Austin, Texas

  • Veracruz All Natural

Another huge thing Austin is known for, food trucks! So this is the perfect combo and their tacos are hugely popular amongst locals. This is the perfect quick and easy breakfast option for those who are more interested in exploring than eating!

Tex-mex

Okay, don’t be ashamed if you have NO idea what this is. Tex-Mex is as the name may hint, Texans version of Mexican food! Surprisingly enough, your own image of Mexican food may be a lot closer to Tex-Mex than it is to traditional Mexican food. So, what should you expect from Tex-Mex? Lots of refried beans and dishes like Chimichangas (deep fried burrito), nachos, and ground beef tacos and enchiladas. So, I’ve pointed out some of the differences so you’re aware… now let’s talk about the fun stuff, where to get it:
  • El Arroyo

El arroyo, tex-mex in Austin, Texas

El Arroyo is a personal favorite of mine because their fajitas are sizzlin’! What makes a good fajita? In my Texan opinion it’s the refried beans. If a Tex-Mex restaurant doesn’t offer refried beans.. is it even Texan? Margarita lovers be known: they have a happy hour just for the drink!
  • Zocalo

I found Zocalo by searching “the most instagramable spots in Austin” (basic, I know) but the reason I point this one out to you is the combination of its quirky atmosphere and good food. Zocalo takes a healthier approach to Tex-Mex, which makes it a little different from the average Tex-Mex you’ll find around Austin. It’s definitely worth checking out whether it’s for the insta or the food! 😉
  • La Condesa

Just another instagramable spot with quirky Tex-Mex food! La Condesa is absolutely delicious with a fun and upbeat environment right in downtown. Another perk, there’s an Urban Outfitter’s right across the street and boutiques around the restaurant that are fun to walk through!

Flower Child, Healthy eating in Austin, Texas

Top PicksFlower Child; where to eat in Austin, Texas

  • Flower Child:

My absolute favorite spot, Flower Child has the most amazing healthy food that ranges from make your own bowls to salads and each item is better than the next. They also make some of the best lemonades in really fun flavors. If you go, I recommend the Thai Cashew Bowl, it’s quite literally one of my favorite things I’ve ever eaten (bold statement right?)!! Another huge benefit, it’s right in The Domain. The Domain is an outdoor shopping area outside of Austin. It has some of your typical shops like Nordstrom, Sephora, Zara, and H&M but it also has some unique boutiques that represent the shopping sense in Texas. Basically, it’s a must!!!
  • The Grove

So, this is on my top list for one specific reason! LOCATION. I took one of my friend’s from home here because it’s right on 6th street. So, if you don’t know, 6th street is a big deal in Austin! It has some of the quirkiest bars. It’s split into two “areas” so to speak! First, there’s dirty six, which is where the majority of the older bars are and then there’s west 6th. West 6th is a little bit more put together compared to dirty sixth. This is where my favorite bars are like Parlor and Yard and Green Light Social, which is across from The Grove. The Grove is perfect to go to before the bars if you want a full meal, or if you just want appetizers. I recommend the appetizers, the brussel sprouts are DELISH!

Cheers!

And that is it! I really hope my Austin Foodie Guide helps all my fellow foodie’s and encourages you all to go visit my gorgeous city! I’m also writing a post on a Nomad’s Weekend Getaway to Austin, so be on the look out! But in the meantime, let us know if you have ever been to any of these places or have any other must-go restuarnsts in the Austin area because I would love to check them out!

XOXO
