A Simple Guide to U.S. Mobile Passports

Have you stepped foot in an airport lately? See any signs about mobile passports? Well if you said yes, you are not alone. Twenty four airports in the United States now let you use a mobile passport to expedite the process of getting through customs once you land in the states from an international trip. When I first saw something about the program, I had questions like what is it, how do you get it and where can you use it? I had heard about it in Europe and was excited to be able to be able to finally get something similar in America!

What else should you know?

I know it says it above, but I can’t stress it enough that your mobile passport DOES NOT replace the need for your real passport. You still have to hand the border control officer your passport along with the bar code you get on the app.

  • Why Mobile Passports speed up the time you spend going through Customs:

You know those machines that you go to before you reach an officer at customs? Well think of your mobile passport app as that machine. Except your passport is already in the system and all you have to do when you land is take a photo of yourself, answer CBP questions and choose the airport you landed at and what airline you flew with. This streamlines the traveler inspection process so the CBP officer doesn’t have to worry about administrative functions and more on inspection. ALSO, people with mobile passports have a separate line, which further makes the process go faster.

  • More about adding family members:

You can add 12 additional profiles on the app. This also means you can answer one set of questions when you land instead of every person filling out a separate trip section for themselves, making it even easier.

Need more info? Visit the mobile passport website or the CBP government site.

So what do you think of mobile passports? Do you think you’ll get one? I know I am excited to test it out next time I go through customs!!
